Mould remediation is the systematic process of identifying, containing, removing, and preventing indoor mould. While consumers handle small, isolated patches, certified professionals manage large-scale or toxic infestations using rigorous safety standards and specialized equipment to prevent spore dispersion.
Professional Remediation
Professionals follow strict industry standards. Their process includes:
- Assessment: Using tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras to locate hidden moisture and mould sources.
- Containment & Filtration: Constructing plastic barriers and establishing negative air pressure to keep spores from spreading, while using HEPA air scrubbers to clean the air.
- Removal & Abatement: Safely removing unsalvageable porous materials (e.g., drywall) and cleaning non-porous surfaces with antimicrobial treatments.
- Verification: Conducting post-remediation air or surface testing to ensure levels have been reduced to acceptable limits.
Consumer (DIY) Remediation
Consumers are advised to handle mould only if the contaminated area is small (typically less than 1 square meter) and does not involve toxic species. If mould remediation is conducted by consumers, consider these precautionary steps:
- Protection: Wearing safety glasses, household gloves, and a N95 respirator to limit exposure.
- Cleaning: Scrubbing hard surfaces with mild detergent and water. Do not paint or apply caulking over mould.
- Disposal: Throwing away porous, mould-contaminated items like ceiling tiles, carpets, or heavily infested drywall, as they cannot be fully cleaned.
- Moisture Control: Addressing the root cause of the dampness by using exhaust fans, fixing leaks, or running dehumidifiers.
Mould remediation is the cleaning and proper treatment of mould from material surfaces or the removal of contaminated materials that are unsalvageable. Other activities, including applying biocides or antimicrobial compounds and sanitization protocols, intended to prevent/manage future mould contamination.
